Concerns Mount Over Unidentified Drones in New Jersey

New Jersey drone sightings

Unexplained drone sightings across New Jersey have sparked alarm, with Republican Representative Chris Smith urging federal action. During a Saturday news briefing, Smith labeled the incidents a serious safety threat and demanded transparency and decisive measures.

“For weeks, we have asked for the truth and actions to mitigate all threats to people and property,” Smith said. “Now, we are demanding it.”

Calls for State and Federal Action

Smith announced plans to draft legislation that would authorize New Jersey state police to bring down drones. This step comes after local sheriffs raised concerns about unidentified drones, some spotted near sensitive military sites.

Military personnel at Earle naval weapons station reported drones flying near an ammunition depot. Smith criticized federal officials for not addressing these reports with urgency. “An ammunition depot of that caliber and these drones are hovering in close proximity to it. Are you kidding me?” he said.

Federal agencies, including the White House, Department of Homeland Security, and FBI, have maintained that the drones are likely “manned aircraft operating lawfully.” However, Smith questioned whether these drones demonstrate “major military power sophistication” and suggested potential links to adversarial nations such as Russia, China, North Korea, or Iran.

Pressure Builds for a Clear Federal Strategy

The sightings have fueled bipartisan frustration over the federal response. New York Governor Kathy Hochul joined the call for action on Saturday, saying, “This has gone too far.”

Smith revealed that he had contacted Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, requesting approval to use force against drones deemed threats. He also highlighted an incident reported by the US Coast Guard, where drones followed a rescue boat at close range. Smith called for capturing one of the drones to uncover its origin and purpose.

In response, the Federal Aviation Administration has implemented no-fly zones in parts of New Jersey. Despite this measure, lawmakers and officials continue to push for broader action, including statewide drone restrictions.

The mystery surrounding these drones remains unresolved. As sightings near sensitive military and civilian areas increase, concerns over safety and security grow louder, with demands for immediate federal action intensifying.
