Drones Smuggling Weapons and Drugs Into UK Prisons

Drones smuggling

Organised crime gangs are using drones to smuggle contraband into high-security UK prisons, posing serious security risks.

Prisons Losing Control of Airspace to Criminals

The UK’s Chief Inspector of Prisons, Charlie Taylor, has warned of an escalating threat as drones deliver drugs, weapons, and phones to HMP Manchester and HMP Long Lartin.

“Organised crime gangs have effectively seized control of the airspace above these prisons,” Taylor stated in his report on Tuesday. “This endangers staff, inmates, and the wider public, constituting a significant national security risk.”

Recent investigations uncovered thriving contraband markets inside the prisons, driven by drone deliveries. Taylor cautioned that this influx could spark violent disruptions and even escape attempts.

Security Failures and Violence Spike

Taylor’s report highlighted significant security shortcomings, including broken netting and malfunctioning CCTV. HMP Manchester, dubbed one of the “most violent prisons in the UK,” was issued an urgent improvement notice in October.

Inspectors found prisoners burning through secure windows to collect drone-delivered packages. The prisons also reported rising drug-related violence and self-harm, with 39% of HMP Manchester inmates testing positive for drugs. At HMP Long Lartin, half of the prisoners admitted to easy access to drugs and alcohol.

Overcrowding Intensifies the Crisis

The crisis is worsened by overcrowding, with England and Wales’ prison population nearing 97,700 in 2024.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour government has introduced early release programs to ease overcrowding. However, Taylor’s report underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures to curb drone smuggling and maintain order in high-security prisons.
