Elon Musk has said he will not buy TikTok. The U.S. government has raised security concerns about the app. It says the Chinese-owned platform could share user data with China.
Musk spoke at a January conference held by The WELT Group in Germany. His comments were posted online on Saturday. He denied any plans to buy TikTok. “I have not made a bid,” he said.
This came after Donald Trump suggested Musk could buy the app if he wanted. Musk replied that he does not use TikTok. “I don’t have plans for what I’d do with it,” he added.
Musk Avoids Buying Companies
Musk said he does not like buying companies. He prefers to start new ones. His Twitter purchase, now called X, was an exception.
The U.S. has been pressuring ByteDance, TikTok’s owner, to sell its U.S. operations. Trump had delayed the ban, giving ByteDance time to find a buyer. But lawmakers still fear TikTok could share U.S. user data. The app denies these claims.
TikTok is no longer on Apple and Google’s app stores in the U.S. However, Android users can download it directly from TikTok’s website.
Uncertainty Over TikTok’s Future
Trump says he is talking with buyers. He expects a decision soon. TikTok has 170 million U.S. users, making it a huge platform.
Trump’s views on TikTok have changed. He once tried to ban it over privacy concerns. Now, he praises it for helping him reach young voters in 2024.
The U.S. government is also looking at a sovereign wealth fund. Trump hinted that it might buy TikTok. But ByteDance denies any plans to sell.
ByteDance and TikTok did not respond to media requests.
