Flu Cases Surge in France and Spain

In France, hospitals report a sharp increase in admissions, particularly among elderly patients at risk of severe complications. “This is one of the worst epidemics I’ve seen in years,” said Dr. Jean-Luc Leymarie. Dr. Olivier Lucidarme emphasized the role of vaccination, noting that most severe cases involve unvaccinated individuals.

Spain is also grappling with rising flu cases, especially in Catalonia and Valencia. Hospitals expect the outbreak to peak next week, with influenza B as the dominant strain. While less congested than in previous years, officials urge readiness to prevent further strain.

Hungary Tightens Restrictions Amid Rising Cases

Hungary has implemented stricter health measures in response to the flu surge. Clinics in Budapest now require masks, and hospitals in Győr, Vác, and Debrecen have banned visitors to curb the spread of the virus.

Rising Death Toll in Romania

Romania has reported over 4,100 flu cases in the past week, nearly doubling the previous week’s numbers. Four flu-related deaths have been confirmed, with Bucharest, Cluj, and Brasov reporting the highest case counts.

Health officials anticipate a further rise in cases as schools reopen and continue to advocate for vaccination. Over 1.1 million flu vaccines have been administered this season, with a nasal spray option available for children aged 2–18. Immunity typically develops within two weeks.
