France Urges Vaccination Amid Rising Meningitis Cases

French health authorities are urging increased meningitis vaccinations as infections surge nationwide. Public Health France stresses that immunization is crucial, especially for infants, adolescents, and young adults, to prevent this severe and potentially life-threatening disease.

Significant Increase in Cases

France recorded 95 cases of meningococcal infections in January and 89 in February, a sharp rise compared to previous years. Two meningococcal group B outbreaks have been identified—one among university students in Lyon and another affecting a family and student group in Rennes. In response, targeted vaccination campaigns have been launched, prioritizing young people.

In 2023, France saw 615 meningococcal infections, the highest since 2010. Experts link the increase to a severe flu season, as influenza can heighten the risk of developing meningitis.

Preventing the Spread Through Vaccination

Since early 2025, France has mandated vaccinations against meningitis B and serogroups A, C, W, and Y for infants. The ACWY vaccine is also recommended for adolescents aged 11 to 14, with a booster available up to age 24.

Meningitis symptoms include fever, headache, and a stiff neck, while meningococcal sepsis can cause fever, rash, and septic shock. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) warns that the disease progresses rapidly and has a fatality rate of 8 to 15%.

The Importance of Vaccination

Although meningitis outbreaks are rare, they often occur in university settings or among close-knit groups. Vaccination is the most effective preventive measure, while antibiotics remain a key treatment option, according to the ECDC.

Authorities continue to encourage public awareness and participation in vaccination programs to curb the rising trend of infections. With proactive immunization efforts, France aims to protect its population and reduce the risk of further outbreaks.
