Irish boxer John Cooney has died at age 28 after suffering injuries in the ring. The tragedy happened during his fight against Welsh boxer Nathan Howells at Belfast’s Ulster Hall last Saturday.

Cooney, defending his Celtic super-featherweight title, fought hard. The referee stopped the match in the ninth round when Cooney struggled to continue. He was rushed to Royal Victoria Hospital, where doctors found a brain bleed. He had emergency surgery but did not survive.

Promoter Mark Dunlop shared the heartbreaking news on Saturday. “With deep sadness, we announce that John Cooney has passed away,” he said.

Cooney had a bright future in boxing. In November 2023, he won the Celtic super-featherweight title by defeating Liam Gaynor in Dublin. He took a year off due to a hand injury but returned in October 2024, winning against Tampela Maharusi.

His fight against Nathan Howells was his first title defense. Many had high hopes for his future in the sport.
