French President Emmanuel Macron announced a significant €2 billion military aid package for Ukraine during a press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Paris. This announcement comes ahead of an international summit aimed at reinforcing long-term security guarantees for Ukraine. Macron’s pledge includes a range of advanced military support as Ukraine continues to defend itself against Russian aggression.
France Enhances Military Support to Ukraine
As part of the newly pledged €2 billion, France will supply Ukraine with a range of military equipment, including Milan anti-tank missiles and MICA missiles for Mirage jets. Additionally, France will send Mistral air defense missiles, armored vehicles, and battlefield drones to aid Ukrainian forces in their ongoing defense efforts. These provisions are meant to enhance Ukraine’s ability to hold strategic positions and increase its resilience against further attacks.
“We must ensure Ukraine can not only withstand present threats but also build long-term resilience against future military challenges,” said Macron during the press conference.
Summit Focuses on Ukraine’s Military Future
The upcoming summit of the “Coalition of the Willing” will center on developing Ukraine’s future military structure. Macron highlighted that the goal is to ensure Ukraine can effectively defend itself in the long term, building a robust defense strategy capable of repelling future invasions.
“We are here to support Ukraine, not only with immediate military aid but also by helping the nation build a strong, independent defense structure,” Macron emphasized.
France’s Peacekeeping Policy
Although France is committed to supporting Ukraine, Macron ruled out the possibility of deploying French peacekeeping forces directly to the front lines. He explained that while peacekeepers could operate behind front lines or in strategic towns and bases, the primary focus would be on strengthening Ukraine’s own military capabilities.
“Sending troops to the front lines is not the solution. Our aim is to empower Ukraine’s forces, not to fight its battles for it,” Macron stated.
Zelenskyy Calls for Continued US Support
President Zelenskyy, standing alongside Macron, expressed his gratitude for France’s support and turned his attention to the importance of continued US involvement. He praised recent cooperation with the US, especially the diplomatic talks held in Saudi Arabia, which he believes unlocked critical aid and intelligence for Ukraine.
“We hope and believe that the United States will continue to be a strong ally,” said Zelenskyy. “Their support has been vital, and we trust they will maintain their position for the sake of Ukraine’s security.”
US and Russia Agree to Black Sea Ceasefire
In a separate development, the United States confirmed a ceasefire deal in the Black Sea after successful talks between American, Ukrainian, and Russian officials. While Russia has agreed to abide by the ceasefire, it has placed conditions on the deal, namely the lifting of sanctions imposed on Russian banks and exports.
“We have made progress, but the lifting of sanctions will remain a contentious issue,” a US official said. “It’s important to note that the ceasefire is contingent upon further diplomatic engagements.”
Macron Rejects Sanction Relief for Russia
Despite pressure from some quarters to ease sanctions on Russia, Macron firmly rejected any suggestions to lift the measures. He referred to the idea as “far too early,” reiterating that peace through strength was essential and could not be achieved by easing pressure on Russia.
“Sanctions are a tool to ensure Russia adheres to international law,” Macron said. “Only through legal compliance and diplomacy backed by strength will we see real progress.”
Zelenskyy Advocates for Stronger Sanctions
President Zelenskyy, standing by Macron’s side, reinforced his stance on sanctions, calling for even stronger measures against Russia. “Sanctions must remain in place and be strengthened. Only through diplomacy backed by force can we achieve a lasting peace,” he asserted.
As both countries continue to solidify their support for Ukraine, the next steps will hinge on the effectiveness of these new military supplies and the continued pressure on Russia. While military aid is critical, the future of Ukraine’s defense structure will also require careful planning and long-term commitment from international allies.
As the situation evolves, all eyes will be on the upcoming summit and the continuing discussions surrounding Ukraine’s defense capabilities and the geopolitical ramifications of the ongoing war.
