On the night between Saturday and Sunday, Russia launched a wave of 165 drones across Ukraine, targeting key infrastructure and civilian areas. The Ukrainian armed forces confirmed the widespread aerial assault, which led to significant damage, casualties, and fires. The attack affected multiple regions, including the capital Kyiv, as well as southern and eastern parts of the country. Ukrainian air defense forces responded but were unable to prevent all of the incoming strikes.
Fires and Casualties in Kyiv:
The capital, Kyiv, was one of the hardest-hit areas. Russian drone strikes sparked intense fires in several districts. Among the casualties, eleven people were injured, including two children. Residential buildings in Sviatoshynskyi were particularly affected, where fires engulfed entire structures. The destruction also extended to Shevchenkivskyi and Obolonskyi districts, with roads and power infrastructure damaged. To contain the fires, 75 firefighters were deployed across the city.
Impact in Southern and Eastern Ukraine:
The southern and eastern regions of Ukraine also bore the brunt of the drone strikes. In Cherkasy, located in central Ukraine, Russian shelling resulted in shattered windows and damaged multi-storey buildings. A series of fires broke out in warehouses and other structures, including a trade base and garden centers. Emergency services were quick to respond, with over 100 rescuers and 26 vehicles dispatched to fight the flames. Despite their efforts, ten apartments were damaged, two of which were completely destroyed.
Ukrainian Air Defense Struggles with Drone Onslaught:
The Ukrainian air defense forces reported the interception of 69 Shahed drones and other incoming threats. However, many of the drones evaded detection and were not intercepted. On Sunday, Russia’s Defense Ministry released footage claiming successful strikes on Ukrainian military targets in Kherson. This footage is part of Moscow’s ongoing narrative that it has carried out effective strikes on Ukrainian military infrastructure.
