The boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul turned into a global spectacle, breaking streaming records. Netflix revealed on Tuesday that the live broadcast of the event, which aired on Friday, garnered 108 million viewers worldwide, making it the “most-streamed sporting event ever.”
The fight, held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, peaked with 65 million concurrent viewers in the U.S., and between 12 a.m. and 1 a.m. ET, an estimated 56% of all TV viewership in the country was tuned into the Tyson-Paul fight, according to Netflix.
In addition to the main event, the co-main rematch between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano also made history, attracting 74 million live viewers globally. This marked the “most-watched professional women’s sports event in U.S. history,” Netflix stated.
Round-by-Round Recap of Tyson vs. Paul on Netflix
Millions of fans watched as Jake Paul triumphed over Mike Tyson by unanimous decision. The live broadcast of the fight became Netflix’s No. 1 title, not just in the U.S., but in 78 countries around the world, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, Italy, Mexico, and South Africa.
However, despite the historic viewership numbers, some Netflix users experienced technical difficulties, such as buffering, video quality issues, and sound problems, which were shared widely on social media.
Netflix acknowledged these challenges and is committed to improving the streaming experience for future live sports events. The streaming service is preparing to broadcast an NFL doubleheader on Christmas Day, featuring the Kansas City Chiefs against the Pittsburgh Steelers, followed by the Baltimore Ravens versus the Houston Texans, with Beyoncé set to perform during halftime.
