Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović expressed confidence that Ukraine is on the path to NATO membership but advised a careful approach. He emphasized that every nation has the right to determine its own future.
NATO Membership for Ukraine: A Growing Conversation
In an interview with Euronews, President Milatović said Ukraine’s potential NATO membership would be a key topic among alliance members. While supporting Ukraine’s bid, he avoided calling for an immediate invitation or tying it directly to peace talks with Russia.
“We supported NATO’s decision to deepen cooperation with Ukraine and launch support mechanisms,” Milatović said. “These steps are crucial for achieving a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.”
Ukraine Pushes for Swift NATO Invitation
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on NATO to extend an official invitation, tying it to his Victory Plan and future negotiations to end the war with Russia. In June, NATO allies affirmed that Ukraine is on an “irreversible path” to membership and promised additional military aid, including F-16 fighter jets and interoperability programs.
Divided Opinions Within NATO
Some NATO countries argue that Ukraine needs more reforms to meet the alliance’s military standards. Others fear that granting membership now could escalate tensions with Russia.
Milatović acknowledged these challenges, predicting that Ukraine’s membership will be a major discussion point at the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague. “This issue will be at the heart of the conversations among NATO members,” he stated.
As the conflict continues, NATO faces the delicate task of supporting Ukraine’s ambitions while maintaining regional stability and avoiding further escalation.
