Ohio Governor Mike DeWine is evaluating potential candidates to replace Vice President-elect JD Vance in the U.S. Senate, with Republican attorney Mehek Cooke emerging as a leading contender. Cooke, a political and legal surrogate for Donald Trump during the 2024 campaign, has built a reputation as a skilled fundraiser and advocate in Ohio. She played a visible role supporting Trump and is recognized for her legal expertise and dedication to public service.

Cooke, who immigrated to the U.S. from India at age five, has a distinguished career in law and politics, including roles as assistant chief counsel in the Ohio governor’s office and as a prosecutor handling high-profile criminal cases. Currently, she leads American Frontier Strategies, a consulting firm, and has remained a prominent voice in state politics.

DeWine, tasked with appointing a temporary replacement for Vance, is expected to select a Republican who can appeal to both Trump loyalists and moderate conservatives. A special election in 2026 will determine who serves the remainder of Vance’s term, which ends in 2028.

While Cooke is widely regarded as a top contender, other candidates are also in the running. These include former Ohio Republican Party chair Jane Timken, Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose, and several current Republican members of Congress. Governor DeWine has emphasized the importance of appointing a “workhorse” capable of earning the trust of Ohio voters.

The decision is expected once Vance formally vacates his seat, with Governor DeWine balancing political considerations to select a candidate respected by diverse factions within the Republican Party. Cooke, known for her integrity and independence, has garnered strong endorsements from local leaders and donors, positioning her as a potential trailblazer in Ohio politics.
