Police in Évora arrested a suspect and quickly launched a wide anti-drug operation across central Alentejo. The Public Security Police carried out 29 coordinated searches in several towns, including Santarém District. The operation later expanded to Montemor-o-Novo, Lisbon, and Samora Correia. The police targeted a large drug trafficking network active throughout the region.
After a 1.5-year investigation, authorities arrested 13 people aged between 19 and 45. Nine men and four women were detained during the raids. Six of these suspects remain in custody as the investigation continues. This operation is one of the largest recent actions against drug trafficking in the Alentejo area.
During the raids, police seized over 135,000 doses of hashish, nearly 700 doses of cocaine, and 85 doses of ecstasy. Officers also confiscated about €60,000 in cash. Along with the drugs and money, the police recovered five high-powered cars, one motorcycle, and two nitrous oxide canisters.
Two firearms were also seized: a 6.35mm pistol and a 12-gauge shotgun. Authorities say this operation dealt a significant blow to a well-organized and widespread drug network in the region. Police continue to investigate to find more suspects and gather evidence.
This crackdown reflects ongoing efforts by Portuguese law enforcement to fight drug trafficking and organized crime. The arrested suspects face serious charges, including drug trafficking and illegal possession of weapons. The public is encouraged to stay informed and support police actions to keep communities safe.
