TikTok Faces Lawsuit in France Over Harmful Content Linked to Two Teen Suicides

TikTok harmful content

Seven families in France have sued TikTok, accusing it of exposing teens to harmful content. Their lawyer claims this exposure contributed to the suicides of two 15-year-olds. The families allege TikTok’s algorithm promoted videos about suicide, self-harm, and eating disorders, endangering vulnerable young users.

Lawyer Laure Boutron-Marmion, representing the families, told broadcaster franceinfo the lawsuit raises serious concerns. She emphasized the role of TikTok’s algorithms in exposing teenagers to dangerous material.

Legal Action Targets TikTok’s Accountability

The families are pursuing collective legal action in the Créteil judicial court. Boutron-Marmion described this as Europe’s first grouped lawsuit against TikTok. They aim to hold the platform accountable for exposing minors to harmful content.

“The parents want TikTok’s legal liability formally recognized in court,” Boutron-Marmion said. She argued TikTok, as a commercial service, must protect its young users from mental health risks.

TikTok has faced increasing scrutiny for its content moderation practices. Critics highlight the platform’s impact on children and teens. Similar lawsuits in the United States target companies like Meta, accusing them of exploiting young users and harming their mental health.

TikTok’s Response and Critics’ Concerns

TikTok has not publicly commented on this lawsuit but previously stated its commitment to user safety. Earlier this year, CEO Shou Zi Chew told US lawmakers about significant investments in safety features for young users. Critics, however, call for stronger measures to prevent tragedies.
