US President Donald Trump signed an order to punish the International Criminal Court (ICC). The ICC was investigating Israel, and Trump said the court was unfair.
Trump accused the ICC of acting without authority. He said the court unfairly targeted the US and Israel. His order came as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Washington.
The ICC issued a warrant for Netanyahu. The court is investigating his actions in Gaza after the October 2023 Hamas attack. Trump’s order says the ICC has no power over Israel or the US. He warned that its actions set a dangerous example.
The US may:
- Freeze assets of ICC officials.
- Ban travel for ICC workers and their families.
- Deny entry to ICC staff.
Activists said the sanctions could hurt justice efforts. Charlie Hogle of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said the order may harm victims seeking fairness.
Some European countries, like the Netherlands, asked ICC members to work together to reduce risks from US sanctions.
