Donald Trump made history on Friday when a Manhattan court sentenced him following his conviction on 34 felony charges. Despite the gravity of the charges, Trump walked free with an “unconditional discharge,” sparking fierce debate nationwide.
Convicted in May, Trump faced accusations of falsifying business records to conceal hush money payments during the 2016 presidential campaign. Judge Juan Merchan defended the sentencing decision, emphasizing that the evidence supported the jury’s verdict but did not justify imprisonment.
Trump, addressing the court remotely from Mar-a-Lago, called the charges politically motivated. “This case was designed to damage my reputation and sway the election,” he said. “I am innocent and have done nothing wrong.”
Judge Merchan, however, described Trump’s actions as “premeditated and continuous deception.” He stated that the severity of the crimes required legal accountability, even if no prison time was imposed.
Republicans Rally Behind Trump
Trump’s sentence drew immediate support from Republican leaders, who framed the trial as a partisan attack.
Sen. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee condemned the ruling as a “joke” and an insult to the American public. House Speaker Mike Johnson criticized the judge for inflating charges to target Trump, calling the case “a gross misuse of the justice system.”
Republicans reiterated their support for Trump’s plan to appeal, with Johnson stating that the case “should never have been brought.” Many argued that the trial exemplified a legal system biased against political opponents.
Criticism from Democrats and Legal Experts
Democrats, however, criticized the leniency of Trump’s sentencing. Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas compared his treatment to that of ordinary citizens who face harsher penalties for minor offenses. “There is a two-tiered system of justice in this country,” she said. “Trump’s ability to walk free underscores that disparity.”
Nikos Passas, a criminology professor, warned that the leniency shown to Trump could harm public trust in the legal system. “When political figures avoid meaningful consequences for serious crimes, it undermines the impartiality of the judiciary,” he said.
