Ukraine Faces Mounting Desertion Crisis Amid Prolonged War

Ukraine desertion crisis strains military

Desertion is straining Ukraine’s military as over 100,000 soldiers have been charged since Russia’s 2022 invasion, according to the General Prosecutor. Exhausted troops, psychological trauma, and faltering morale have led tens of thousands to abandon their posts, weakening defensive lines and complicating battle strategies.

A Crisis in the Ranks

Soldiers cite relentless combat, insufficient resources, and disillusionment with the war’s progress as reasons for desertion. Many who take medical leave fail to return, haunted by the trauma of war and the loss of comrades.

One deserter described the harrowing conditions: “You sit under constant shelling, watching friends die, knowing you might be next.” These absences have led to critical territorial losses, such as the fall of Vuhledar in October, where entire units abandoned their positions.

The aggressive mobilisation campaign has failed to address the manpower deficit, with some battalions reduced to a fraction of their intended strength. Officials estimate that nearly half of desertion cases occurred in the past year alone, with many coming from newer recruits.

Seeking Solutions Amid Exhaustion

Military leaders are reluctant to prosecute deserters, often focusing on persuading them to return instead. However, systemic issues persist, with troops receiving limited psychological support. Lawyer Tetyana Ivanova noted, “There are almost no healthy people left in the infantry.”

Despite the challenges, Ukraine’s armed forces remain determined to hold their ground. “Everyone is just really tired,” said a 72nd Brigade officer. The war’s toll on manpower and morale underscores the urgent need for stronger support and more sustainable strategies to maintain Ukraine’s defense.
