Downdetector, a site that tracks online service issues, received over 50,000 reports just after 15:30 GMT. The number of complaints started to fall soon after. Many users took to social media to express their frustration. Some people also faced minor issues with Facebook and Facebook Messenger, but the scale was much smaller than WhatsApp’s disruption.
Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, later confirmed the problem. A spokesperson said, “We know some users had trouble sending messages on WhatsApp for a short period. We have fixed the issue.”
