The renowned cultural venue “Gaîté Lyrique” in Paris has become the unexpected shelter for hundreds of migrants. The occupation highlights pressing challenges in France’s migration policies and sparks widespread debate.
From Cultural Hub to Shelter
The “Gaîté Lyrique,” a historic theater established in the 18th century, is known for its innovative and political programs. In December, the venue hosted a migration-focused event called “A Fresco of Migration.” About 200 migrants, mostly African men, attended the discussions on reimagining refugee accommodation.
At the end of the event, attendees decided to stay, turning the heated venue into a temporary shelter. Since then, they have occupied the space day and night, with their numbers now reaching 300.
Financial Strain and Political Backlash
Initially, the theater’s management tolerated the occupation. However, mounting costs have put the venue under immense financial pressure. A spokesperson revealed losses amounting to several hundred thousand euros. The city of Paris, which owns the theater, and the French government have offered no assistance.
The situation has become a political flashpoint. Conservative critics blame Socialist Mayor Anne Hidalgo for failing to address the crisis. Meanwhile, accusations of naivety have been directed at the theater, with some suggesting that activist groups helped instigate the occupation. Many occupants claim to be minors, but officials argue most are adults.
No End in Sight
Theater director Juliette Donadieu sympathizes with the migrants’ need for shelter but admits the venue cannot provide proper accommodation. The theater has closed its doors entirely, canceling or relocating scheduled events. Without intervention from authorities or a resolution, the occupation is set to continue, underscoring the broader challenges of migration in France.
