Ford Recalls 273,789 SUVs Due to Brake Line Leak Risk

Ford is recalling 273,789 SUVs because of a defect that could cause brake fluid to leak. This problem may reduce the vehicle’s stopping power and increase the distance needed to stop. The recall includes certain 2022 to 2024 Ford Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators. So far, no accidents or injuries have been reported.

The affected vehicles mainly include Ford Expeditions from model years 2022 to 2024 and about 50,474 Lincoln Navigators from the same period. The issue happens when the front brake lines rub against the engine’s air cleaner outlet pipe. Over time, this contact can wear down the brake lines and cause leaks.

Ford traced the problem to its Kentucky Truck Plant. During engine installation, some front brake lines were bent in a way that allowed them to touch nearby engine parts. This mistake in assembly caused the wear and leaks. Ford fixed this by changing the hose routing process in November 2024, so only vehicles built before this change are affected.

Ford will notify dealers starting May 14, 2025. Vehicle owners will receive letters between May 26 and May 30. Owners should make an appointment with a Ford or Lincoln dealer. The dealer will inspect the brake lines and replace the brake line or air cleaner outlet pipe if needed. All repairs will be free. People who already paid for similar repairs may get reimbursed.

To check if a vehicle is included in the recall, owners can visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall website and enter their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

Ford found the issue after seeing a rise in brake system warranty claims for the 2022 Lincoln Navigator in early 2025. A review flagged possible brake line leaks, and by April, Ford linked the problem to the assembly process.

Brake fluid leaks can reduce braking efficiency and increase accident risk. Even though no crashes have been reported, Ford asks owners of the affected vehicles to have their SUVs checked quickly.
