Israel Leaves UN Human Rights Council – Accusations of Bias

Israel withdraws from UNHRC accusing bias

Israel has officially withdrawn from the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC). Foreign Minister Gideon Saar accused the council of unfairly targeting Israel while neglecting broader human rights issues. On X, he claimed the UNHRC spreads antisemitism instead of promoting justice.

Saar highlighted that Israel is the only country with a fixed agenda item (Item 7). The council has passed over 100 resolutions against Israel—more than against Iran, North Korea, Cuba, and Venezuela combined. Israel refuses to accept this continued discrimination.

Earlier, former President Donald Trump signed a decree questioning US involvement in several UN organizations, including the UNHRC. However, the US is no longer a member, as its term ended at the start of the year.

Although an official withdrawal is not necessary, Washington may choose to stop participating as an observer and avoid future membership.

Since 2022, Austrian diplomat Volker Türk has served as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
