Notre-Dame Cathedral to Reopen After 2019 Fire

Notre-Dame Cathedral reopening

Notre-Dame Cathedral is set to reopen to the public after being closed for over four years. The cathedral closed following a devastating fire in April 2019 that caused significant damage. An investigation confirmed that the fire was accidental, likely caused by an electrical fault or a smoldering cigarette left by a worker.

A Symbol of Paris Rebuilt with Global Support

In response, French President Emmanuel Macron promised the cathedral would be rebuilt “more beautiful than ever.” Over $700 million in donations from wealthy families and people worldwide helped fund the restoration. Before the fire, Notre-Dame was famous for its architectural beauty, colorful glass, artworks, and relics, including the Crown of Thorns.

The cathedral will officially reopen on December 7 and 8, with an invitation-only ceremony. Public celebrations will follow from December 7 to 15, culminating in two “Magnificat” concerts on December 17 and 18. Additional events will continue until June 8, 2025.
