Portugal’s 2025 State Budget Approved Amid Protests

Portugal 2025 state budget

Portugal’s parliament approved the 2025 state budget, supported by PSD and CDS, with the Socialist Party (PS) abstaining.

All other opposition parties, including Chega and Iniciativa Liberal, voted against it despite securing some amendments earlier. During the vote, PSD and CDS applauded, while Chega protested with placards reading, “This Parliament has no shame.”

Before the session, Chega displayed banners accusing politicians of raising their salaries. The banners featured political leaders with money obscuring their faces. Assembly President José Pedro Aguiar-Branco condemned these actions as “political vandalism” and disrespectful to parliament.

Leaders Dispute Budget Responsibility

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro called the approval a key achievement and highlighted contributions from both PS and Chega. He noted their influence on some decisions, even those the government opposed.

PS leader Pedro Nuno Santos denied supporting the government, emphasizing the budget is its sole responsibility. “PS abstained to ensure state functionality,” he explained, criticizing setbacks in critical areas.
