Tesla Recalls Over 230,000 Vehicles Due to Rearview Camera Issue

Tesla recalls 230000 vehicles

Tesla has recalled over 230,000 vehicles due to problems with rearview cameras, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). A shortage of computer circuit boards caused the cameras in certain models to fail, preventing images from displaying. This malfunction could increase the risk of accidents, the agency noted.

Non-Compliance with Safety Standards

The rearview camera problem means the affected Teslas do not meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard’s “rear visibility” requirements. The NHTSA emphasized that these standards are crucial for vehicle safety. Tesla has not yet responded to USA TODAY’s inquiry about the recall.

Affected Tesla Models

The recall includes 239,382 vehicles across four Tesla models:

  • Model 3 (2024-2025)
  • Model S (2024-2025)
  • Model X (2023-2025)
  • Model Y (2023-2025)

Owners of these models should act promptly to address the issue.

Fixing the Rearview Camera Problem

Tesla owners can resolve the issue by installing a free over-the-air software update provided by Tesla. For vehicles with circuit board failures or those at risk of failure, Tesla will replace the affected computers at no cost. Notification letters will be mailed to vehicle owners starting March 7.

Investigation of Additional Tesla Features

The NHTSA is also investigating 2.5 million Tesla vehicles regarding reports of crashes linked to the Smart Summon and Actually Smart Summon features. These features allow drivers to move their vehicles remotely using a phone app.

The agency’s preliminary evaluation will determine whether to escalate the investigation into an engineering analysis before recommending a recall, Reuters reported.

How to Check for Recalls

Owners unsure about recalls on their vehicles can search using their vehicle identification number (VIN). Use the NHTSA’s online tool for the latest information. Stay proactive to ensure your vehicle meets safety standards.
