Investigators seized over 150 pipe bombs and other homemade explosives from Brad Spafford’s Virginia home in December. Federal prosecutors believe this is the largest seizure of its kind in FBI history.

The explosives were primarily found in a detached garage, alongside bomb-making tools and materials, according to court filings. Additional pipe bombs were discovered unsecured in a bedroom Spafford shared with his wife and children.

Spafford, 36, faces charges of possessing an unregistered short-barrel rifle, with prosecutors hinting at further explosive-related charges.

Defence Disputes Dangerous Intent

Spafford’s defence attorneys argued he had no intention of committing violence, citing his clean criminal record. They also questioned whether the explosives were functional and pointed out there was no evidence he had threatened anyone.

The investigation into Spafford began in 2023 after an informant reported his stockpiling of weapons and ammunition. The informant, a friend, revealed Spafford disfigured his hand in 2021 while making homemade explosives.

The same informant claimed Spafford used images of President Biden for target practice and expressed support for political assassinations.

Court Considers Safety Concerns

Law enforcement officials searched Spafford’s property on 17 December, discovering firearms, explosive devices, and a vest loaded with pipe bombs. Due to safety risks, most devices were detonated on-site, while others were retained for analysis.

Prosecutors emphasized Spafford’s potential danger, referencing his manufacture of “lethal” pipe bombs and political violence rhetoric. Although the court initially approved house arrest, Spafford remains in custody while further arguments are considered.

Prosecutors maintain Spafford’s actions, such as stockpiling explosives and riot gear, demonstrate a clear interest in violence. The case continues as authorities assess the full extent of his intentions and actions.
