As Donald Trump prepares for his presidency, European leaders underline the importance of strong relations with Washington amid policy concerns. They emphasize the need to adapt to potential shifts in international agreements and the global political landscape.

Calls for Strong Alliances and Adaptation

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy reaffirmed the UK’s dedication to its special relationship with the US. He expressed optimism about working with Trump over the next four years.

Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs highlighted the strength of US-Latvia ties, despite challenges involving defense spending, climate policies, and European unity. “Europe must adapt to Trump’s unpredictable leadership,” he stated, citing concerns over possible US withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accord.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot stressed the need for Europe to set clear boundaries with the US. He emphasized protecting European sovereignty and safeguarding the public debate from external influences, including US-based social media platforms.

Concerns Over Foreign Influence and Greenland

Barrot’s remarks come amid fears of political interference from social media platforms like Elon Musk’s X. Musk’s endorsements of Germany’s far-right AfD party and criticism of UK Labour policies have increased European concerns.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen warned of potential foreign policy crises if Trump continues controversial strategies. He referenced Trump’s suggestion that Denmark should transfer Greenland to the US to “protect the free world.”

Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte B Egede rejected the idea, asserting Greenland’s independence. “We are Greenlandic. We don’t want to be American or Danish,” Egede stated firmly.

Trump’s Promises and Planned Actions

After taking office, Trump plans rapid executive actions. These include expanding fossil fuel production, deportations, and reducing civil service protections. He has pledged to bring a “new era of American strength, prosperity, dignity, and pride.”
