Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk paid a surprise visit to Lviv on Tuesday, meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Tusk underscored Poland’s unwavering support for Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s ongoing invasion.
“Poland will not waver in its support for Ukraine,” Tusk said. “This is a fight for freedom, and we stand united.”
EU Leadership: Pushing Ukraine Closer to Membership
As Poland prepares to take over the presidency of the EU Council in January, Tusk outlined plans to prioritize Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
“Ukraine belongs in the EU, and we will do everything to make this goal a reality,” Tusk stated. He also reaffirmed Poland’s backing of Ukraine’s NATO ambitions, acknowledging the challenges on the road ahead.
Tusk announced additional military aid for Ukraine and the opening of a new border crossing to improve logistical cooperation between the two nations.
Zelenskyy Acknowledges Poland’s Key Role
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy thanked Poland for its consistent and reliable support since the start of the war. He highlighted Poland’s significance in both Ukraine’s security and its integration into NATO.
“Poland has proven to be a steadfast ally,” Zelenskyy said. “Their efforts to support our NATO aspirations are crucial for regional stability.”
Lasting Peace: Unity Over Temporary Solutions
During the meeting, Tusk emphasized Poland’s intention to promote peace initiatives during its EU presidency. Zelenskyy, however, stressed that temporary ceasefires are not a solution.
“Peace must be permanent and grounded in unity,” Zelenskyy declared. “Only through shared strength and values can we achieve real stability.”
