British Prime Minister Keir Starmer hosted German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at Chequers, his official country retreat, on Sunday, to explore ways to strengthen the UK’s partnership with the European Union. While reaffirming that Britain will not rejoin the EU single market, Starmer emphasized the need for closer collaboration on trade, security, and energy policy.
Deepening Cooperation Without EU Membership
The meeting in Buckinghamshire, approximately 50 kilometers northwest of London, was a key step ahead of Starmer’s visit to Belgium on Monday, where he will meet EU leaders to discuss enhanced UK-EU cooperation.
“A closer partnership with the EU is in Britain’s best interest, and I believe it also serves the EU. Over the past seven months, we have already made progress in improving our approach, tone, and engagement,” Starmer said.
While ruling out a return to EU membership, Starmer emphasized his commitment to strengthening economic ties, expanding defense collaboration, and reinforcing joint efforts in energy policy.
Shared Stance on International Security
In addition to discussing UK-EU relations, Starmer and Scholz addressed major global security concerns, including the war in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East. Both leaders stressed the importance of continued support for Ukraine, as the conflict with Russia extends into its fourth year.
Scholz described the meeting as “a strong demonstration of the close ties between our countries” and highlighted the importance of a united approach to global challenges.
Following their discussions, the two leaders took a walk around the Chequers estate, followed by a working lunch to further exchange views.
A Pragmatic Shift in UK Foreign Policy
This meeting underscores a significant shift in Britain’s foreign policy strategy. While a return to the EU remains off the table, Starmer’s government is working toward a pragmatic and constructive partnership with European nations. By fostering stronger ties with EU allies, the UK aims to tackle economic and geopolitical challenges together, setting the foundation for a more stable and productive UK-EU relationship.
