Satirical news outlet The Onion has acquired Alex Jones’ Infowars after it was auctioned off to help pay damages Jones owes to the families of Sandy Hook victims. Jones was previously ordered to pay nearly $1.5 billion after being found liable for spreading false claims that the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was a hoax. The terms of the sale to The Onion were not disclosed. With the acquisition, The Onion plans to transform Infowars into a parody platform, with Everytown for Gun Safety committing to a multi-year advertising deal in support. John Feinblatt, president of Everytown, highlighted the irony of using Infowars—a platform that once profited from tragedy—as a tool for education and awareness. The rebranded Infowars is set to launch in January and will maintain its original studio in Austin, Texas, along with its video archives and social media accounts.Jones, who had expressed hope that a “patriot” would acquire Infowars, reacted to the news by streaming an “emergency broadcast” on X, claiming that “Democrats are coming to shut Infowars down.” Meanwhile, Ben Collins, CEO of The Onion’s parent company, described the acquisition as a humorous take on the “unfiltered” nature of modern media.
